Hundreds of residents in Pacific Grove left without power for more than 24 hours (2024)

Hundreds of residents were affected in Pacific Grove by various power outages. One neighborhood off Alder Street near George Washington Park was left in the dark for over 24 hours. A large tree fell on various powerlines causing the outage. The outage, starting at about 3 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, left many to celebrate in the dark. "Most exciting memorable New Year's Eve,” Judy Bedford, a Pacific Grove homeowner, said. "Dark and cold, very cold. It went off about three o'clock and it's been off ever since, and my basem*nt is flooded," Laurel Robertson, Pacific Grove resident, said. "It was unusual because we didn't have any electricity. But we had already planned to have a game night all night, and it worked but it was just by candlelight instead […] but it was still really fun,” Hannah, a Pacific Grove visitor, said. Neighbors say PG&E crews came out to check on the power but couldn’t do anything with the tree in the way, leaving the city and the company at odds. "PG is also known as power gone, so yes, we often have power outages here. We don't know, we really haven't gotten any information there's been a number of crews. I've come out and looked the power line crews have said they can't do anything until the trees removed and as you can see this tree is going to take a lot of work to do something to get it removed,” Robertson said.Residents are angry and hope the city does more to maintain its trees. Some homeowners took matters into their own hands and started generators. Others were left to deal with floods on top of the outage. Some had no choice but to leave for a hotel due to medical reasons to charge medical machines or just to charge their phones and get some rest. "My granddaughter is here from Arizona and my daughter is here from Modesto. They're thinking about going home because there's nothing else to do,” Bedford said. KSBW reached out to both Pacific Grove and PG&E for answers about when power will return. The city says they are actively working on a plan to remove the tree, and PG&E still hasn’t gotten back to us. “They're just trying to do the best they can but if they can get the power on quicker that be awesome so we can get back to watching football,” Michael, a Pacific Grove visitor, said.
