When the Whitebeard Pirates reached Marineford, they immediately started fighting the Marines.

The Marines were pushed back, but ultimately they managed to kill Ace. Luckily for them, Whitebeard was murdered by the Blackbeard Pirates. Even after they accomplished their goal, the Marines did not stop killing other pirates. Thankfully, Shanks arrived in the nick of time and brought the war to an end.
