I’m sorry to hear yours didn’t. I think an additional egg white would fix that. I’ll update the recipe- thank you for the heads up! Sophia Farmer — September 13, 2023 @ 3:57 pm I can definitely try that. Thanks. Again, it tastes great and overall is crispy. Just wasn’t clumpy…not a big deal. Thanks for the reply 🙂 MaryB — May 5, 2023 @ 4:48 pm Reply My favorite base recipe for granola! So good and easy. cindy — January 31, 2021 @ 1:59 pm Reply Thought I had left a rating on this before, but just to be sure…..Best granola recipe I have ever tried! Seriously…..and I have tried some others, but this one…..it’s the keeper. I make it just as the recipe is written, and after it’s baked, I like to add dried chopped dates, sometimes coconut, craisins, all kinds of dried fruit. I bagged this granola and gave to so many as Christmas gifts…..and many wanted the recipe. If you are looking for a yummy granola that will “cluster” after baking…..this is your recipe. Thank you for this amazing recipe! Lucretia — April 16, 2020 @ 11:27 am Reply I love this. I have made it twice now, only adding pecans (because that’s what I had) . I also added some vanilla, and then craisins after it cooled. Delicious! Thanks for zharing! Allie {Baking A Moment} — April 20, 2020 @ 11:51 am Reply My pleasure Lucretia! Basic Granola Recipe (1)

There’s nothing fancy about this recipe. It’s about as basic as it gets.

I love brunch food and I’ve got plenty of fun and unique breakfast ideas on this site to prove it. But sometimes you just wan to keep it simple.

Basic Granola Recipe (2)

I love this granola because it’s so versatile. It tastes good paired with all kinds of fruit. It works just as well with tropical pineapple or mango as it does with apples, cherries, or lemon. Tops for yogurt parfaits, plus it’s great cold or warm. Lately I’ve been addinga little milk and heatingit slightly in the microwave- so comforting! It softens up a little bit but still has a great hearty texture.

Basic Granola Recipe (3)

If you’ve never made homemade granola, I urge you to try this recipe! It’s so quick and easy (we’re talking 10 minutes of active time), and nothing store bought could ever beat the taste or crunch. Plus you can totally put your own spin on it. Add dried fruit, seeds, coconut, nut butters, even chocolate- the options are limitless!

FAQs

How much granola is enough? ›

Go for a healthier choice with less added sugars and fats. And pay attention to the suggested serving size. How much granola should be consumed in a day? For one meal, a 1/4 to 1/2 cup serving should do.

What ingredient makes granola clump? ›

Clumpy Granola Method: Add Egg White

The idea is that the egg's protein will help the oats bind to each other and create delicate clusters.

How do you make granola not crunchy? ›

Baking time: Increase the baking time for your granola. The longer you bake it, the drier and crunchier it will become. Keep a close eye on it to avoid burning, and stir it occasionally during baking to ensure even toasting.

Is granola better with milk or yogurt? ›

Yogurt and granola can be genuinely healthy, depending on the yogurt and granola you use. There are better and unhealthy forms of the two fixings. The best blend is Greek yogurt with granola, which is high in protein and fiber.

Are you supposed to put milk in granola? ›

Granola with milk or yogurt is a great option for a healthier sweet treat at the end of the day, but you can also use it to top ice cream, milkshakes or homemade sweets.

Is 1 cup of granola too much? ›

The serving size for granola can differ by brand, but a typical portion of granola is 1/3 cup, says Sass, “about the size of one-third of a tennis ball.” That means sitting down to a big bowl of granola for breakfast is excessive.

Is it OK to eat granola every day? ›

Yes. "Granola does contain important nutrients, and if you enjoy it, eating some every day is probably fine as part of a balanced diet," says Harris-Pincus.

What to avoid in granola? ›

(Oils that are monounsaturated or polyunsaturated are healthier.) So look for granolas with less than 3 grams of saturated fat per ⅓ cup. While the fiber content should be decent if the granola says it's made from “whole grains,” watch out for granolas that have less than 2 grams of fiber per ⅓ cup.

How do I get my homemade granola to stick together? ›

Add an egg white.

The whites act as a kind of glue that binds the ingredients together. To ensure that the egg whites coat all the ingredients, I beat them with a whisk until foamy and increased in volume, which makes it much easier to fold into the granola.

What holds granola together? ›

Make sure that whichever granola recipe you use, it calls for some liquid, typically oil of some kind (I recommend olive oil for a subtle earthy, floral flavor, or melted unrefined coconut oil for subtly coconutty flavor). The liquid will help the chia seeds to gel, ensuring the granola sticks together.

What is the binder in granola? ›

The binder is what helps the base ingredients clump together into clusters. Traditionally this is usually a sugar syrup, but it's possible to use any ingredient that has the power to bind. Egg - Egg whites are a great binder for granola if you are trying to avoid sugar.

What can I use instead of oil in granola? ›

Unsweetened Applesauce: Great oil replacement and doesn't affect the flavor. Maple Syrup: Perfect for sweetening the granola.

Does homemade granola harden as it cools? ›

NOTE: The granola will clump and harden while cooling - not during baking. Allow to cool before stirring in the raisins, cranberries, or craisins. If stored in an airtight container, your granola could last for 2 weeks.

Do you need to cook granola before eating? ›

Enjoying Granola on its Own

No further preparation necessary—just grab a spoon and enjoy! To ensure that you're getting a balanced breakfast, use a type of granola that includes a nutritious mixture of ingredients like nuts, seeds, and dried fruit.

Is granola cooked before eating? ›

Granola contains rolled oats, fruits, honey, raisins, almonds, and other components. Oatmeal must be cooked in hot water before eating, but granola oats can be eaten immediately as a snack.

Do you eat granola on its own? ›

Granola can be enjoyed on its own as a midday snack. This makes it perfect for when you are short on time. Just grab a handful of granola and go! In my opinion, chunky granola made with honey has the best snackable crunchy texture because it's made in a way that gives you larger chunks of granola.

Is it okay to eat granola by itself? ›

One of the easiest ways to enjoy granola oatmeal is to consume it on its own. It's usually a good idea to have some granola that's full of healthy ingredients stashed away in the cabinet for those hectic mornings. It's a snack that will make you feel full with minimum preparation.
